OS X: 10 handy shortcuts for the dialog


One of the many advantages to a Mac is the shortcuts. This gives you quick access to certain options or applications on your Mac. There are a large number of OS X users who frequently use keyboard shortcuts, in many cases, a keystroke because a lot faster then perform the same action using the mouse or track pad.


Disadvantage of keyboard shortcuts is that you of course need to remember. What you might not expect is that you also can use keyboard shortcuts in the dialog box when saving a file.

The diagram below provides an overview of these key combinations.

• Spacebar                               Enable QuickLook for the selected file
• cmd + d                             Select the Desktop as the location for storing
• cmd + Shift + h               Select the home directory as the location for storing
• cmd + Shift + a               Select the application folder as the location for storing
• cmd + Shift + point         Show all hidden files
• cmd + r                              Open the selected file
• cmd + f                              Activate the search field in the dialog
• cmd + point                       Close the dialog
• cmd + Shift + g               Activate the "Go to ..." window
tab file names or locations to fill in the "Go to ..." window
